At the end of october the work started for a new attraction at Tierpark Gettorf. "THE MAD HOUSE" was built like a normal wooden house in pier and panel contruction. In december the house will be turned upside down by two heavy-duty cranes.
From the end of march 2010 on the house will be opened for visitors against additional admission fee.
During a routine examination keepers realized that there was in fact no difference in the structure of the genital region of our armadillos "James" and "Miss Sophie". Pictures were taken and sent to the zoos of origin of our armadillos. They confirmed our suspicion: "James actually is a "Jane"!
Now we have to look for another male, either a new James for Sophie or a Tarzan for newly identified Jane! However, since the two girls get along with each other quite nicely, we can take our time finding a new mate.
After preliminary experiences with our ring-tailed lemurs we started to train some other animals in January 2009. 5 keepers work with our Bactrian camels and the wallabies by means of brigde-and-target-training in order to reduce boredom and facilitate the daily maintenance.
After a construction period of about half a year the i-punkt-Natureum could be opened with a small ceremony on November 4th 2008. The new teaching facility was presented to local authorities and the public. Now it is open to classes and courses. Booking is arranged by the supporters' organisation "Freunde des Tierparks Gettorf e.V."
On September 4th 2008, two new inhabitants were welcomed at Tierpark Gettorf. From Jesperhus Blomsterpark in Denmark a young six-banded armadillo named "James" arrived at Gettorf, wistfully expected by our female "Miss Sophie".
And after the sudden death of female tapir "Julia" in August we quite soon found a new partner for unlucky widower "Rüdiger". 4-year-old female "Manú" arrived from Zoo Magdeburg to cheer him up.
On August 15th 2008, Tierpark Gettorf could welcome a pair of Bactrian camels from Best Zoo in the Netherlands. Male "Khan" and female "Nansal" can be marvelled at at the deer range of the park.
The coatis at Tierpark Gettorf have moved! Since August 1st 2008, they can be found at their new exhibit right behind the entrance.
Assisted by our supporters' association "Freunde des Tierparks Gettorf e.V. (Society of the friends of Tierpark Gettorf) works started to offer our visitors a new teaching facility with a large classroom for school classes and other groups.
For the first time in its history Tierpark Gettorf houses an armadillo. On February 14th, 5-month-old female "Miss Sophie" came from Tierpark Aschersleben to Gettorf. In the course of the year she will receive a mate.
Since Easter 2007, we offer a new attraction to our visitors: Come and feed our wallabies from inside the exhibit. Each day at 11:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. you can enter the exhibit together with a keeper to feed the wallabies without separating fences or moats.
